Speed Spell teaches your child to retain accurate thinking and recall under time pressure whilst developing skills for reading and spelling.
Age: 4-8 years Players: 2+ Contents: 2 x 35 Alphabet pieces 2 x Spell strips 1 set x African Alphabet cards Manual: How to develop skills through Play!
Develops: Early literacy skills Whilst playing Speed Spell your child can practice letter and sound recognition.
Generating new words that begin with particular letters will reinforce their vocabulary and ability to distinguish sounds.
Sequencing Spelling out the word on the card builds letter sequencing skills.
Figure ground (visual perception) Looking for a particular letter amongst a crowd of other letters, develops figure ground. This helps your child to, for example, find a word on a page when reading, find a specific colour pencil in the pencil box or find a particular shirt on the cupboard shelf.
Speed and Competitiveness Racing against another player builds up speed required for keeping up with the pace of classroom work. Children often fall behind in class because their work pace is slow, even though their understanding of the work is good. Note – only focus on the race once the child has grasped the concepts of the letter sequencing and of finding the letters. Speed is something we attach to a skill. Speed introduces an element of competition. This adds positive, productive pressure for children in this age group. Learning to think under pressure is a priceless skill.
Visual Memory This is built upon when your child is required to recall the sequence of letters on the African Alphabet cards.
